Trump says EU and Mexico face 30% tariff from August

President Donald Trump has announced that the European Union and Mexico will face a 30 % tariff on imports to the United States from August 1.

He warned that he would impose higher import taxes if any of the American commercial partners decided to take revenge.

The 27 -member European Union – the largest commercial partner in America – said earlier this week that he hoped to agree on a deal with Washington before August 1.

Trump also said this week that the United States will impose a new tariff on goods from Japan, South Korea, Canada and Brazil, starting from August 1. Similar messages this week have been sent to a number of commercial partners in the smaller United States.

In the letter that was sent on Friday to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Layen, Trump wrote: “We had years to discuss our trade relationship with the European Union, and we concluded that we must stay away from this long, fixed, and counter -commercial deficit, which is generated by your tariff tariffs, policies and commercial policies.”

“Our relationship was, unfortunately, far from mutual,” the letter added.

The European Union was a frequent goal of Trump’s criticism. On April 2, a 20 % tariff was suggested to the goods of the mass and then threatened to raise it to 50 % with the suspension of commercial conversations.

Washington and Brussels were hoping to reach an agreement before the deadline on July 9, but there were no advertisements for progress.

In 2024, the American trade deficit with the bloc was 235.6 billion dollars (202 billion euros; 174 billion pounds), according to the US Trade Representative Office.

Von der Lin said that the European Union was ready to “continue working for an agreement by August 1.”

Its statement added, “A few economies in the world are identical to the level of openness and commitment to the European Union for fair trading practices.”

“We will take all the steps necessary to protect the interests of the European Union, including adopting the proportional counter measures if necessary.”

In his message to the leader of Mexico, Trump said the country was not enough to stop North America, a “stadium that follows NARCO”.

“Mexico helped me secure the borders, but what Mexico did is not enough,” Trump added.

Mexico responded to Trump’s threat on Saturday, describing it as a “unfair deal.”
