Leeds responded, though, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s penalty and Anton Stache’s goal restored parity and set up a frenetic final 15 minutes.
Dominik Szoboszlai thought he had won the goal for Liverpool when he scored in the 80th minute, but Tanaka scored at the far post after the visitors failed to handle a left corner kick, angering the home fans.
Drag means Leeds is now three points ahead of the bottom three. Liverpool is in eighth place.
