Dozens of former officials spoke to the BBC about their role in enforcing the brutality of the Assad regime – including the man who said that he tortured the detainees, then defected in 2012.
The rare direct certificate is part of the BBC’s investigations in bad prisons in Syria under its former president, Bashar al -Assad, who was overthrown last December.
The United Nations report said earlier this year that frustration and torture under the previous regime constitute crimes against humanity.
Syrian human rights groups estimate that about 100,000 people have disappeared under Assad’s 24 -year rule.
BBC agreed to hide the identities of the former regime officials who spoke to them because of the value of their certificates.
In the United Kingdom, you can watch the full documentary, Survival from Syria’s prisons, here.
