United, who hit the post through Bruno Fernandes during the first half, rose to eighth place, while their rival is one point behind fourth-placed Leeds United, who beat Chelsea 3-1 at home on Wednesday.

United will next play away to Wolves on Monday (20:00 GMT), a day after West Ham visit Brighton & Hove Albion (14:00).
