In December last year, 54 bodies of the Niger River were recovered after a boat that might have carried more than 200 passengers.

The government has made it necessary for travelers to always wear water jackets, but this is not often applied.

In February, the Minister of Maritime and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, established a “special committee on banning boat accidents in Nigeria”, and in May the ministry announced that it will distribute 42,000 that will fall life across 12 river states in the country.

Later this month, the National Inland Water Ways (NIWA) started a campaign they called “No Survival Jacket, No Travel”, and “No Night of Traveling” in the cases of Niger and Cuar, where boat accidents occurred regularly in the recent past.

The Great Niger state in Nigeria is through the mass of the Earth and people tend to travel a lot through water because it is often faster and cheapest way to roam.
