Niger coup leader Abdourahamane Tchiani sworn in as president for five years

The military ruler Niger was sworn in as president of the country for a five -year transition.

Gen. Abdhaaman Cheni has led the country since 2023, after the elected Niger President, Mohamed Bazoum, took off.

On Wednesday, General Chayani took over the presidential office under a new charter to replace the constitution of the country of West Africa.

It was also promoted to the country’s highest military rank for the General Army, and signed a decree ordering the dissolution of all political parties.

During a ceremony held in the capital, General Qiyani said of his new military rank: “I receive this discrimination with great humility … I will strive to upgrade the level of confidence in me.”

The transition to democratic rule is in line with the recommendations made by the committee after national discussions.

The new charter says that this five -time period is “flexible” depending on the country’s security situation.

Niger was plagued by jihadist attacks for many years – one of the issues that the leaders of the military council were martyred when they were coup.

The military acquisition followed a series of others in the region – as Juntas Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso managed.

All four countries have cut their relations with France former colonial power and the image of new alliances with Russia.

All of them except Guinea, withdrew from Ecowas, the Western regional bloc of Africa.

Niger relations with Ecowas were disrupted when the military council proposed a three -year transitional period to democratic rule immediately after the coup.

Ecowas described this plan as “provocation” and threatened to intervene using force, before declining later.

The Gen Tchiani administration is sued former President Bazoum over allegations of high betrayal and undermining national security.

Bazoum is still being held in the presidential palace with his wife, while his son got a temporary release last January.

According to the state -run -off news agency, General Qianani said that the new Niger Charter is in line with traditional constitutions, but also takes “unprecedented measures to protect our natural resources so that the Nigerians really benefit from exploiting their wealth.”
