Mud volcano erupts in southern Taiwan

A mud volcano erupted in Taiwan on Wednesday, spewing water, sediments and gases.

The video shows locals enjoying the spectacle by throwing flaming rags into the volcano, igniting the methane gas released during the eruption.

An expert told the BBC that the Wandan mud volcano is an unusual example of this geological phenomenon.

Geologist Dr. Mark Tingay said that although this mud volcano is essentially erupting in the same place in southern Taiwan, new eruption sites have been known to appear kilometers away.

The mud volcano has erupted 11 times in three years.
