Authorities said they have arrested a man in connection with a deadly car bomb attack that killed eight people and injured 20 others in Delhi last week.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) said the vehicle used in the attack was owned by the government He described it as a “terrorist incident.” It was registered in the name of the arrested suspect.
They accused him of conspiring with the alleged suicide bomber. Authorities say the suspect is a resident of Indian-administered Kashmir.
The explosion occurred near a metro station close to the Red Fort, one of the most prominent landmarks in Delhi.
The agency said it confiscated another car allegedly belonging to the suicide bomber for examination. So far, it has interviewed 73 witnesses, including people injured in the explosion.
The explosion that occurred outside the historic fort was the first of its kind in the heavily guarded city since 2011.
The attack occurred on Monday evening at 18:52 local time (13:22 GMT) when a slow-moving car ran over it. It stopped at a busy traffic light and then exploded.
Within hours of the incident, Interior Minister Shah confirmed that the explosion occurred in a white Hyundai i20.
Footage from the site showed the charred remains of a white car and a number of other smashed vehicles, including a rickshaw and rickshaws.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the attack as a “conspiracy”, and his government pledged to bring “the perpetrators, their collaborators and sponsors” to justice.
Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi said the news was “absolutely heartbreaking”.
