Five killed in Israeli air strikes on tents near Khan Younis, medics say

Five Palestinians, including two children, were killed, and several others were injured when Israeli planes bombed tents for displaced people west of Khan Yunis, according to paramedics at the Kuwaiti field hospital.

The raids targeted the coastal Al-Mawasi area in Gaza.

Medical teams said that the dead were two women aged 46 and 30, a man aged 36, and two boys aged eight and ten.

Paramedics said that about 32 injured people were treated in hospital.

Rescue workers told the BBC that they had recovered bodies from Al-Najat camp, a cluster of tents that has housed hundreds of displaced people in recent months.

The Israeli army said it “struck a Hamas terrorist” after five of its soldiers were injured earlier on Wednesday.

The Israeli army said in a statement, “The Hamas terrorist organization committed a flagrant violation of the ceasefire agreement, as terrorists attacked Israeli army forces deployed in the Rafah area.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to “respond accordingly.”

Witnesses said that the initial strike targeted a tent inside the Al-Mawasi area for displaced people, followed by explosions near Kuwait Hospital, which sparked panic among families who took refuge nearby.

Hamas described the Israeli action as barbaric and indiscriminate and a violation of the ceasefire that began on October 10.

The Israeli military launched its Gaza offensive in response to the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, in which approximately 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage.

Since then more than 70,100 Palestinians have been killed as a result of the Israeli campaign, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry in the Strip.
