A Bengaluru traveler’s quiet breakfast stop at the Rameshwaram Café outlet inside Kempegowda International Airport has turned into a police case, with the owners of the restaurant now booked after he was allegedly served tainted food and was later falsely accused of extortion. What started as a routine pre-flight meal soon led to a series of complaints, counter-complaints and an official FIR.
The owners and a senior actor of popular Rameshwaram cafe in Bengaluru have been booked after a publication alleged that the restaurant served him tainted food at Kempegowda International Airport and later filed a false extortion case against him.
According to the FIR, the complainant Nikhil N was traveling from Bengaluru to Guwahati on July 24 when he stopped at the Café Terminal 1 outlet at around 7.42 am. He and his friends ordered Ven Pongal and filter coffee when they allegedly found a superworm in his food.
He informed the staff who offered him an alternative, but he refused because he needed to board the plane. Several customers recorded the incident on their phones, the complaint said.
Nikhil said he left the café “without making any noise” and boarded his flight at around 8.45 am.
However, the next day, he learned through media reports that a representative of Rameshwaram Cafe, named Sumanth PL, had filed a complaint accusing him of demanding Rs 25 lakh and threatening the reputation of the cafe’s brand.
Nikhil denied making any financial demand, refund request or threat. He claimed to have been on the plane at 10.27am, the time mentioned in the café’s complaint, and produced his boarding pass and travel records as evidence. He also confirmed that he never called the phone numbers mentioned in the cafe’s complaint.
The police later clarified that they had found no evidence of blackmail or extortion by Nikhil or his friends during their investigation into the cafe complaint.
Nikhil subsequently filed a counter-complaint requesting an investigation into the alleged food safety violation and the “false extortion case”. Request CCTV footage from 7:30 to 8:00 AM, flight travel logs, call details associated with the numbers mentioned in the cafe complaint, and take action against the owners.
Based on his complaint, BIAL police station registered an FIR on November 29 against cafe owners Raghavendra Rao, Divya Raghavendra Rao and senior executive Sumanth Lakshminarayan.
The FIR refers to the offenses under Section 61 (criminal conspiracy), Section 123 (causing hurt by poison, etc., with intent to commit an offence), Section 217 (providing false information to mislead a public servant), Sections 228 and 229 (fabrication and furnishing of false evidence), and Sections 274 and 275 (adulteration and sale of harmful foods) of the Bharatiya Nyaya. Sanhita.
Nikhil alleged that serving contaminated food endangered his life and the subsequent counter-complaint damaged his personal honor and reputation. The investigation is ongoing.
