Pakistan caught attention after a humanitarian aid shipment sent from Islamabad to Sri Lanka contained expired items. The shipment included medical supplies, food baskets, and basic materials.
The consignment was sent as emergency support as Sri Lanka faces landslides and floods due to Cyclone Ditwa. After the inspection, officials discovered that many of the items were either expired or unusable, describing this as a “serious concern” within Sri Lanka’s disaster management and foreign affairs departments.
The Pakistan High Commission in Sri Lanka shared photos of the relief goods shipment on board the X ship.
“We always stand together! Relief parcels from Pakistan have been successfully delivered to help our brothers and sisters affected by the recent floods in Sri Lanka, demonstrating our unwavering solidarity. Pakistan stands with Sri Lanka today and always,” the High Commission wrote.
However, social media users mocked Islamabad for sending expired items to Sri Lanka. One user said: “What a shame! Pakistan sending expired food items to Sri Lanka. Flood victims. Absolutely disgusting act!”
Another user commented, “Pakistanis don’t speak English fluently, which shows in their unintentionally funny interviews after a cricket match. Moreover, they are unable to read simple English, and it shows in this diplomatic faux pas where they send expired aid materials to flood-hit Sri Lanka. Kisi koh kya he pata chalega.”
A third user wrote: “Pehle khud khalo kuch bhaijan (sic).”
Another user jokingly wrote: “Given the state of Pakistan’s economy, expired relief supplies may have been their national lunch. But sharing your last meal requires heart, respect and courage.”
Another user commented: “It’s a dead economy….it’ll be over soon.”
But this is not the first time Pakistan’s bluff has been exposed when it helps countries overcome natural disasters. In 2023, Islamabad sent various aid items including winter tents, blankets, food and medicine to Türkiye following the devastating earthquake.
However, social media users raised eyebrows when a Pakistani journalist claimed that some of the aid materials sent to Truckee were the same ones Ankara sent to Pakistan during the 2022 floods, and had simply been repackaged.
