IndiGo flight chaos: Govt orders IndiGo to clear all refunds by Dec 7 evening, warns of action for any delays

The Civil Aviation Ministry has issued a strict directive to IndiGo, ordering the airline to clear all pending refunds to passengers without any further delay. According to the Ministry, all refunds related to canceled or disrupted flights must be fully processed by 8:00 pm on Sunday, December 7, 2025. Additionally, airlines have been prohibited from charging rescheduling fees to passengers whose travel plans have been affected, ensuring that travelers are not penalized for operational disruptions. Officials explained that any lapse, delay or partial compliance would result in immediate regulatory action.

IndiGo canceled more than 200 flights from Delhi and Mumbai on Saturday, after securing temporary relaxation on Friday in the second phase of court-mandated duties and rest norms for cockpit crew.

Passenger Support and Refund Cell

As part of the compliance framework, IndiGo has been directed to set up dedicated cells to support passengers and facilitate refunds. These specialized units will be responsible for direct communication with affected travelers, quickly processing refunds, and arranging alternative travel options without requiring passengers to submit repeated follow-up requests. The current automatic refund mechanism will continue until flight schedules return to full stability, ensuring passengers receive timely updates and seamless compensation.

Baggage handling

To address widespread baggage concerns, the ministry has also directed IndiGo to track all lost or delayed baggage and deliver it within 48 hours. Airlines must provide clear tracking information, maintain proactive communications, and compensate passengers where applicable under existing passenger rights standards. The Ministry stressed that airlines are responsible for ensuring that the luggage arrives at the passenger’s home or preferred address within the specified timetable.

Do not disturb policy

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to the Do Not Disturb policy, noting that every operational decision during this period must prioritize the well-being of passengers. Continuous coordination is underway between airlines, airport operators, security agencies and other stakeholders to protect passengers’ rights. Additional oversight mechanisms have been strengthened to ensure appropriate assistance to the elderly, persons with disabilities, students, travelers receiving treatment and passengers requiring urgent or compassionate travel.

The authorities added that they are closely monitoring the pace of operational recovery and will intervene where necessary to ensure that the situation returns fully to normal as soon as possible. The ministry stressed that protecting the financial and travel rights of passengers remains its top priority as IndiGo works to stabilize operations and prevent further disruptions.
