Several killed after bus crashes into bus stop in Stockholm

Swedish police said that several people were killed and injured after a bus collided with a bus station in central Stockholm.

The circumstances surrounding the accident around 15:23 (14:23 GMT) on Valhallavagen Street in the Swedish capital remain unclear.

Police spokeswoman Nadia Norton said the bus driver had been arrested and a manslaughter investigation had been opened as a routine matter.

It is not clear whether there were passengers on board. The police said that they do not comment on the number, gender, or ages of those affected at the present time.

The accident occurred near the University’s Royal Institute of Technology.

Pictures published by local media show rescue teams helping people trapped under the double-decker bus.

A witness who owns a shop on the street told SVT that the bus collided with a pole in front of the bus shelter. They said several people entered the store crying.

“We don’t yet know what caused this, but my thoughts now are primarily with those affected and their families,” Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said in a post on X.
