Thai PM dismissed by court over leaked phone call with Cambodian leader

The Prime Minister in Thailand was removed by the Constitutional Court, where the country’s policy was drowned in turmoil and a blow to the strongest political dynasty.

Paetongtarn Shinawatra has been rejected because of its violation of ethics in a leaked phone call in June, where it can be heard as it invites the former leader of Cambodia Hun Sen “Uncle” and the criticism of the Thai army, amid border tensions with Cambodia.

The invitation, which Hun Sen himself leaked, harmed her reputation and was accused by critics of undermining the country’s army.

Paitongtarn, the daughter of former Prime Minister Thaxin Shinwatra, makes the fifth prime minister to be removed from his position by the court since 2008.

On Friday, the nine judges voted in court from six to three against Paetongtarn, and they spent that her actions had violated the ethical standards expected from her office.

The court said that Paetongtarn has a “personal relationship” “appeared to be in line with Cambodia” and rejected its allegations that the invitation was “personal negotiations … restoring peace without using violence.”

In a ruling, he said, “It caused suspicion” whether its actions “will benefit Cambodia more than the interest of the nation.”

Paetongtarn confessed to court ruling, but she insisted that she was trying to save lives.

I called her with Hun SenAt one time, an intimate friend came to her father, when tensions rose on the Thai border, which erupted weeks after a five -day conflict in which dozens of people were killed and hundreds of thousands of their homes fled.

Paetongtarn, 39, joined Pheu Thai only in 2021 and rose to power after her predecessor Srettha Thavisin was rejected by the Constitutional Court to appoint an ally of the cabinet who was imprisoned for his efforts to bribe the judge.

Her alternative will be chosen by Parliament, where her party has a gentle majority after withdrew her main partner in the coalition, the conservative Bhumjaithai party, its support for its call.

Parliament should not be dissolved in order to choose a new leader, but the majority of deputies need to support one of five registered candidates.

Chaikasem Nitisiri, 77, who is a former justice candidate, is a PHEU candidate to replace Paetongtarn. Anutin charvirakul, from Bhumjaithai, is also among the first place.

The strong Shinawatra family presides over many Thai governments – and the removal of Paetongtarn is a blow to its political lineage.

She became the third Shinwatra abandoned their prime minister: her father Thaakin was removed due to a military coup in 2006, and her aunt Yingluk was removed by the Constitutional Court in 2014.

Despite his retirement from official policy for years, Thaxin has been greatly influential – although it is now unclear how much the effect will continue to be the name Shinawatra now.
