30 killed as China sees summer of extreme weather

The Chinese authorities said at least 30 people died in Beijing and more than 80,000 people were evacuated to safety, as heavy rains and floods in northern China.

Eight other people died after a landslide on Monday in Chenghedy, about three hours northeast of Beijing.

China deals with a summer of harsh weather. The heat waves hit the eastern region of the country earlier this month, while the floods were swept southwest of the country.

Against the background of the huge floods in northern China, President Xi Jinping called for “comprehensive rescue efforts” and asked the authorities to prepare for “the worst extremist scenarios.”

The President said on Monday: “You should not strive any effort to search for and save the missing or trapped, to transfer and resettle the population in the affected areas, and to reduce the losses to the maximum extent.”

The Chinese authorities allocated 200 million yuan ($ 28 million; 21 million pounds) for recovery efforts, including transportation and other infrastructure.

The outskirts of Beijing, including the suburbs of Mayon and Hiro, were more difficult due to heavy rains.

The floods hurt dozens of roads and the force was disrupted for more than 130 villages. Videos are rescuers wandering in deep flood water to reach the two ways, as well as helicopters, drones that transport food and other aid to the disaster.

Mrs. Yang, who works in the Chinese BBC County, told her that she was very concerned about her family, who lives in the Mayon region – one of the areas in which the floods were afflicted.

Since Sunday, she was unable to contact her parents and grandfather, who are all suffering from health problems and have limited transportation. Her family took care of her pets: eight cats and three dogs.

She said that their village is small and remote, with about 10 families, adding that she is afraid that rescuers will completely lack it. Motivated by despair, she moved to social media to appeal to save, hoping to be found soon.

The population recalled the areas damaged by the floods how quickly the disaster.

“The flood has rushed, like this, very quickly and suddenly,” Chuang Cell, the owner of the store in Tayishiton, near Beijing, told Associated Press. “At any time at all, the place was filled.”

Jar Chuang told Associated Press that when the floods came, “he just ran on the upper floor and waited for rescue.”

“I remember thinking, if no one comes to get us, we will be in a real problem,” he said.

Beijing is not strange to floods, especially at this time of the year. One of the most memory was in modern memory in July 2012, when 190 mm was immersed in the city in one day, killing 79 people.

This summer, floods caused corruption across comprehensive areas of China.

Two people were killed and 10 people were lost in Shandong Province earlier this month when a hurricane was struck in eastern China. Two weeks ago, three people were killed in Yan, southwest of China.

The harsh weather, which is increasingly associated with climate change, threatened the population of China and the economy – especially the agricultural sector in a trillion dollars.

The Ministry of Emergency Management said earlier this month that natural disasters in the first half of the year cost China 54.11 billion yuan (7.5 billion dollars; 5.7 billion pounds). The Ministry indicated that the floods represent more than 90 % of the losses.
