Man missing after rare shark attack in Israel

A missing swimmer after a very rare shark attack off the coast of northern Israel on Monday.

This happened at the sea in Hadira, about 40 km (25 miles) north of Tel Aviv.

The accident witnessed people on Olga Beach, who can be heard screaming in shock in footage published on social media.

It is known that sharks are gathering there as warm water is discharged by the local power plant, especially at this time of the year, but they are usually not harmful.

There have been no deadly shark attacks registered in water off Israel since the country’s founding in 1948.

The police closed the beach and searching for the missing man.

In the online joint video, a man can be seen at a distance of a few hundred feet to the sea. He sees him wandering as people shout on the beach as being attacked.

“I was in the water, I saw the blood and there were screams,” witnesses, Elijah Motai, told Ynet News to Ynet News.

“I was a few meters away from the beach,” he said. “It is terrifying. We were here yesterday and we saw sharks revolving around us.”

Dusky and SANBAR sharks gather in the area, which are dominated by the Orot Rabin Power station, the largest in Israel.

It is attracted by the water improved by the plant and fish that are transported there from a nearby current.

The Monday incident is only the fourth documented shark attack in the history of Israel, according to Ynet.
