Explosion at Spanish mine kills at least five

Officials say at least five people died and two missing after an explosion in a mine in northern Spain.

The explosion occurred in the Cerredo mine in Degaña, ASTURIAS, about 450 km (278 miles) northwest of Madrid around 09:30 (07:30 GMT).

Local emergency services said it was called for a “problem with a machine” in the mine.

At least four others were injured and the search is underway for missing workers. Ambulances, firefighting and rescue services were sent to the scene.

The Mining Brigade also published the dog unit.

The injured were taken to local hospitals for treatment.

The President of Astorias Adrian Briebon has ordered two days of mourning in the area.

The civil protection plan in the region, designed to control emergency situations, has been activated at its lowest level. This indicates a local position that may be controlled by the available resources.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez sent his condolences to the families of the victims.
